Use dedicated business accounts
A separate checking account and, when appropriate, a business credit card make business transactions easier to identify and reconcile.
Document owner activity separately
Owner contributions, withdrawals, reimbursements, and personal charges paid by the business should not be treated like ordinary operating expenses. Record them clearly and ask your tax professional about tax treatment.
Keep supporting records
A bank statement can show that money moved, but the supporting invoice, receipt, or other record explains the business purpose. Organize both.
Fix mixed transactions promptly
If a personal charge appears in the business account—or vice versa—document what happened and correct the bookkeeping while the details are still easy to remember.
Make monthly review easier
When accounts are separated, the reconciliation process is faster and management reports are less cluttered by transactions that do not belong to normal business operations.
