Why states ask for registered-agent information

When an LLC or corporation registers with a state, the filing commonly asks for a registered agent and a physical address that meets that state’s rules. The agent provides a reliable point of contact for official notices.

Can an owner serve as the registered agent?

In many states, an eligible owner or other person can serve if the state’s requirements are met. Commercial registered-agent services are another option. Availability, privacy preferences, business hours, and multistate operations can affect the practical choice.

Keep the information current

If the registered agent or address changes, the business may need to update the state record. Keep confirmation of the current agent, renewal information if a service is used, and copies of state filings in the company records folder.

Registered agent does not replace business management

A registered agent receives official communications; that role does not replace bookkeeping, licensing, tax compliance, or other business responsibilities.
